NASA is excited to welcome Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in March 2017. Furukawa will be the first Japanese astronaut to live and work in space, joining an illustrious roster of astronauts that includes American icons Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.

Furukawa was born on November 27, 1970, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. He complete a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from Kyushu University of Technology in 1993 and a Master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Tohoku University in 1995. In 1998, he earn a Doctorate degree in aerospace engineering from Tohoku University.

From 1998 to 2001, Furukawa serve as an engineer at JAXA’s Headquarters Satellite Development Department where he work on development of the H-II Transfer Vehicle including design studies for advanc cryogenic propulsion systems. From 2002 to 2004, he was an assistant professor at Kyushu University of Technology and then serve as a research fellow at Nagoya Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2006.

In 2007, Furukawa Join NASA as an engineer assign to the ISS Program Integration Division (IPD). He has been involv with multiple aspects of ISS program including studies for human habitation technologies; integration and testing of new hardware and software components for station operations; documentation; science planning; risk assessment; crew health assessments; International Space Station Advisory Committee (ISAC) interactions; public affairs support;

Who is Japanese astronaut Fukue Aiko?

Fukue Aiko is a Japanese astronaut who will be the first woman to travel into space as part of a NASA crew. She was selected as one of the candidates for the Japanese Astronaut Corps in 2012 and has since undergone training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
